The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, many his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
