Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
